OpenAI’s Latest Model: GPT-4o
OpenAI unveiled its latest model, GPT-4o, last night, boasting the ability to handle various types of data within a single unified framework. With GPT-4o, users can interact with the AI through text, voice, video, or images, all in real-time.
GPT-4o: OpenAI’s Newest Weapon in the AI Race Against Gemini
GPT-4o: OpenAI’s newest weapon in the AI race against Gemini is more useful, intelligent, and versatile. While Gemini currently lags behind GPT-4 in content generation capabilities, OpenAI can’t afford to rest on its laurels. A complacent approach could allow Google’s Gemini to eclipse them, as Gemini isn’t solely about raw model strength.
GPT-4o Available to the Public for Free
In a bid to increase the adoption of its generative AI technology, OpenAI is making GPT-4o available to the public for free. Additionally, the company has launched a macOS application for ChatGPT Plus subscribers starting today.
The macOS First Strategy: A Puzzling Move?
Prioritizing macOS Users
Notably, OpenAI has chosen to release the macOS app first, with a Windows version to follow later this year. This decision is somewhat puzzling, given Microsoft’s significant investment in OpenAI with over $10 billion. Many would expect a Windows-first approach. OpenAI clarified to Axios that they prioritized macOS because “that’s where the users are.” This statement can be interpreted in two ways: either OpenAI believes Apple users prefer native apps over web apps more than Windows users do, or there is simply a higher concentration of OpenAI users on macOS, despite Windows commanding over 70% of the desktop OS market compared to macOS’s 15%.
A Potentially Strategic Move
However, there’s potentially a more strategic reason for this move. Microsoft might be keen on delaying the ChatGPT app for Windows to avoid overshadowing the upcoming AI Explorer feature in the Windows 11 24H2 update.
Showcasing the ChatGPT App on macOS
During OpenAI’s demo, the macOS ChatGPT app showcased its capability to run alongside other applications. For instance, it can read content on the screen and respond to queries via voice or text. When used with Visual Studio, ChatGPT could answer questions related to the Python code displayed. Interestingly, recent reports indicate that the forthcoming Windows 11 AI Explorer will offer similar features. Described as a tool that records and organizes screen activities into a searchable timeline, AI Explorer allows users to find information via natural language queries. It also enables assistance from AI Explorer or Copilot on any on-screen content, mirroring the ChatGPT app’s functionality.
Windows Users Await AI Enhancements Thus, even though the ChatGPT app for Windows is slated for release later this year, Windows users might find it redundant due to the native AI capabilities built into the OS soon. The Windows 11 24H2 update, featuring these AI enhancements, is expected to be available by September or October. OpenAI’s unveiling of GPT-4o signifies a leap forward in AI capabilities and interactivity. From introducing cutting-edge features to strategically launching apps, OpenAI continues to push the envelope, ensuring it remains at the forefront of the AI race against rivals like Gemini.
