Meta’s latest social network, Threads, has launched its own fact-checking initiative after leveraging Instagram and Facebook’s networks for a few months.
Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, recently announced that the platform has introduced functionality that enables fact-checkers to evaluate and label false content on Threads. However, Mosseri did not specify the exact timeline for this rollout, nor did he clarify if the program is restricted to certain geographic areas.
The specific fact-checking organizations collaborating with Meta for Threads remain unidentified. We have reached out to the company for further information and will provide updates as they become available.
This development appears to be primarily in preparation for the upcoming U.S. elections. Although India is currently in the midst of its general elections, it is improbable for a social network to implement a fact-checking program during an election period rather than beforehand.
Back in December, Meta announced its intention to extend the fact-checking program to Threads.
“At present, we align fact-check ratings from Facebook or Instagram to Threads, but our objective is to enable fact-checking partners to directly assess and rate misinformation on the app,” Mosseri stated in a post at the time.
