X, previously known as Twitter, has rebranded TweetDeck as X Pro and placed it behind a subscription model. In response, a new contender for column-based social media management has emerged from Instagram Threads.
Today, Mark Zuckerberg revealed that the social network is experimenting with pinned columns on its web platform. Although the Meta CEO did not provide specific details about the types of content that can be pinned, a screenshot he shared implies that users will at least have the ability to pin topics.
Meta has announced that users can now pin their favorite searches, accounts, saved posts, and notifications. Additionally, an auto-refresh feature is available for this column to facilitate faster updates. Currently, this feature is limited to a small user base globally.
This development potentially implies that the Threads API could offer third-party developers greater flexibility in rendering content from the social network in innovative ways. However, Meta has yet to discuss allowing developers to create independent Threads clients via its API.
Developers have previously created TweetDeck-like experiences for other social networks, such as Bluesky and Mastodon. Mastodon, in particular, features its own integrated TweetDeck-style interface on the web. Nevertheless, Mark Zuckerberg’s recent announcement signifies the initial step towards a column-based tool for Threads.
The key question remains: will it be named ThreadsDeck?
