Consumer interest in the newest advancements in AI technology is escalating rapidly. OpenAI’s recent release of its flagship model, GPT-4o, has triggered an unprecedented surge in mobile revenue for the company, notwithstanding the model’s free availability on the web.
Launched last Monday, GPT-4o boasts capabilities in handling text, speech, and video, with real-time responsiveness and a variety of emotive voice options, significantly enhancing its power compared to previous versions. This groundbreaking innovation is motivating more users to transition to OpenAI’s paid subscription service, as evidenced by recent analytics from Appfigures, an app intelligence firm.
Although OpenAI announced that GPT-4o would be accessible to users on its free tier, this offering excludes users of its ChatGPT app on mobile devices. Mobile users are instead encouraged to upgrade to the $19.99 per month ChatGPT Plus subscription to experience OpenAI’s latest technology.
This strategic approach has spurred a rise in subscription demand among mobile users, resulting in the highest revenue increase on mobile platforms that OpenAI has recorded to date.
According to Appfigures, the net revenue for the ChatGPT mobile app experienced a significant surge of 22% on the day of the GPT-4o launch, with continued growth observed in subsequent days. By Tuesday, net revenue had reached $900,000, almost double the app’s daily average of $491,000. It is important to note that this net revenue figure is calculated after deducting commissions taken by Apple and Google.
In the previous week, from Monday to Friday, the ChatGPT mobile app generated $4.2 million in net revenue across both the App Store and Google Play, marking its highest revenue spike to date. This increase underscores a strong consumer interest in exploring the latest AI advancements on mobile platforms, even though it is relatively more expensive than a Netflix subscription.
Moreover, the trend shows no signs of abating. In fact, data suggests that the momentum may either be sustained or even amplify further. Stay tuned for more updates.
