January 17 marked a significant day for Samsung, as the company launched its new flagship smartphone lineup for the year and introduced a suite of new AI-powered features designed to improve communication, productivity, and creativity.

What is Galaxy AI?
The ‘AI’ in Galaxy AI stands for ‘advanced intelligence,’ not artificial intelligence, as one might assume. This branding is applied to a suite of new features debuting on the 2024 Samsung Galaxy S smartphones.
Which devices support Galaxy AI?
Galaxy AI was unveiled as part of the launch of the Samsung Galaxy S24, S24 Plus, and S24 Ultra on January 17. According to Drew Blackard from Samsung, “we’re excited to announce that we plan to roll out Galaxy AI experiences, introduced today, to select Galaxy devices in the first half of this year.”
A slide during the presentation depicted the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5, Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5, Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra, Samsung Galaxy S23, Samsung Galaxy S23 FE, and Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra. It’s presumed that other devices in the same product families, like the Galaxy S23 Plus and Samsung Galaxy Tab S9, will also be supported.
When can I use Galaxy AI features?
The Samsung Galaxy S24 series launches on January 31, and all Galaxy AI features will be available at launch.
How many Galaxy AI features are there, and what are they?
Samsung detailed 12 key features at the S24 series’ launch that rely on Galaxy AI, with more expected to follow. The current list includes Circle to Search, Live Translate, Interpreter, Chat Assist, Android Auto, Note Assist, Transcript Assist, Edit suggestions, Generative Edit, AI watermarking, AI-generated wallpapers, and Instant Slow-mo.
What is Circle to Search and how does it work?
Circle to Search, co-developed with Google and also coming to the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro, simplifies searching for content relevant to anything on your screen. It works by long-pressing the home button and drawing a circle around visible content you want to explore further. On the S24 and S24 Plus, you can use your finger, while the S24 Ultra also supports the S Pen stylus.
What is Live Translate and how does it work?
One of the most impressive demos during the S24 launch was Live Translate. This feature allows two-way text and voice translation during calls in real-time, facilitating seamless communication with friends or business associates in different languages. The feature runs in Samsung’s native Phone app and supports 13 languages at launch, with data processed on-device (additional languages may need to be downloaded for offline use).
What is Interpreter and how does it work?
For face-to-face conversations in different languages, Interpreter is the ideal feature. It offers two-way text-based translation in a split-screen view that updates in real-time as you speak, functioning without the need for internet access.
What is Chat Assist and how does it work?
Chat Assist can be used anywhere you use the Samsung keyboard. It provides real-time message translation and includes Tone Tweak, which can reword your text to suit different situations, making your communication sound more professional, polite, or casual.
What is Context-Aware Android Auto Messaging and How Does It Work?
A standout addition to Android Auto (Android’s in-car user experience) is Galaxy AI’s ability to summarize incoming messages and provide automatically generated replies. Additionally, it offers executable actions, like sending your ETA.
What is Note Assist and How Does It Work?
Samsung Notes now includes an AI-powered summarization feature, coupled with automated formatting, templates, and covers.
What is Transcript Assist and How Does It Work?
Similar to Note Assist, Transcript Assist uses AI-supported speech-to-text to transcribe, summarize, and translate recordings made within the native Voice Recorder app.
What is Edit Suggestion and How Does It Work?
When reviewing photos within the native Gallery app, Galaxy AI can offer one-touch, context-aware edit suggestions, such as removing reflections, enhancing colors and contrast, or adding portrait mode-like background blur around a subject.
What is Generative Edit and How Does It Work?
Whether rotating images or adjusting the position and size of subjects in a frame, Generative Edit intelligently fills the gaps created by substantial edits, aiming for a seamless final result.
What is AI Watermarking and How Does It Work?
As part of the Galaxy AI initiative, Samsung promises to embed a specialized watermark and metadata tag to make it easier to identify images that have been altered or generated by AI, promoting honesty, authenticity, and transparency.

What are AI-Generated Wallpapers and How Do They Work?
We have a comprehensive guide on generating AI wallpapers on the Galaxy S24 series. The experience offers a series of templates with editable prompts that you can tweak using predefined alternative terms, customizing subjects, styles, and more. You can create unique wallpapers, from expressionist T-rexes to lace-like flowers, and generate entirely new versions using the same prompt as many times as you like.
What is Instant Slow-Mo and How Does It Work?
Using AI interpolation, the feature generates additional frames when you long-press on videos within the native Gallery app, creating up to 120fps slow-motion footage even if the clips weren’t originally filmed in slow motion—perfect for reliving special moments.
How Do I Keep My Galaxy AI Data On-Device Only?
While these powerful AI features are appealing, you may not be comfortable with sending personal data off-device for processing. Samsung offers a single toggle to disable off-device processing of Galaxy AI data while keeping most features functional. To disable off-device processing, navigate to Settings > Advanced Features > Advanced Intelligence > turn on the ‘Process data only on device’ toggle.
