Adobe has unveiled a groundbreaking update for Lightroom, introducing the Generative Remove feature, which utilizes generative AI technology to enable seamless object removal from photos. Announced on Tuesday, this feature, built on Adobe’s Firefly AI, is now available for early access.
According to Adobe, the Generative Remove tool is designed to handle even the most complex backgrounds. The company explains, “Generative Remove is effective for editing intricate backgrounds and surroundings, such as eliminating stains from patterned clothing, smoothing out wrinkles on tablecloths in food photography, removing unwanted reflections in water, and more.”
This development follows Adobe’s initial venture into generative AI, which was announced back in March 2023. At that time, the company highlighted Firefly as a pivotal advancement in their AI strategy, aiming to integrate new generative technology models with Adobe’s long-standing expertise in imaging, typography, and illustration. The goal was to enhance the content creation process across Creative Cloud, Experience Cloud, and Document Cloud.
Initially, Firefly offered text-to-image generation and the ability to modify pictures in various styles. Over the past 14 months, Adobe has expanded Firefly’s capabilities to its video suite, used it for designing vector graphics in Illustrator, and introduced a Generative Fill feature.
Adobe is collaborating closely with the photography community to refine and expand the functionalities of the new Remove tool. Additionally, Adobe announced the broader availability of the Lens Blur feature on Tuesday. This tool allows users to apply bokeh-style effects to images, adding a sense of depth.
This series of updates underscores Adobe’s ongoing commitment to leveraging advanced AI technologies to enhance creative workflows and provide cutting-edge tools for content creators.
