In an exciting move, Apple is preparing to dive into the generative AI space at next week’s World Wide Developer Conference. According to reports, the tech giant is expected to announce a collaboration with OpenAI aimed at enhancing Siri’s capabilities.
Fresh insights from Bloomberg provide additional details about the upcoming announcements scheduled for Monday’s 10 a.m. PT keynote. The initiative will reportedly be branded as “Apple Intelligence,” a name that cleverly retains the “AI” acronym while signaling a broad foray into large language models (LLMs).
Apple Intelligence represents a significant expansion into AI, possibly encompassing the OpenAI collaboration and an ensuing chatbot. Similar to post-WWDC developer-focused operating system updates, this new AI system will debut as an opt-in beta. It will be available on forthcoming models of the iPhone, iPad, and Mac.
The report indicates that a select number of older devices will also support Apple Intelligence, including iPads and Macs equipped with M1 chips or higher, and notably the iPhone 15 Pro. Unfortunately, this suggests that the standard iPhone 15 might not be compatible with the new system.
Initially, Apple Intelligence will concentrate on augmenting existing applications, such as summarization features in Safari and enhanced notification summaries. Additionally, Siri is set to receive a significant upgrade in 2024, gaining capabilities like voice-activated photo editing. Rather than focusing on flashy features, Apple’s AI initiative appears aimed at making its operating system more intuitive and user-friendly.
Despite its hardware limitations, Apple Intelligence will not function solely on-device. Instead, it will employ a hybrid approach, utilizing both local and cloud-based processes depending on the complexity of the task.
