eBay has unveiled a cutting-edge AI feature that enables sellers to replace image backgrounds with AI-generated backdrops. Currently accessible to iOS users in the U.S., U.K., and Germany, the tool will gradually become available to Android users over the forthcoming months.
In a move similar to Amazon and Google, the e-commerce giant announced on Tuesday the roll-out of its AI-powered background enhancement tool. This innovative feature automatically removes existing image backgrounds, allowing users to substitute them with custom backdrops, such as an elegant tabletop or a vibrant, brand-specific background. Last year, Amazon and Google launched analogous tools for advertisers, empowering brands to utilize generative AI for creating new product visuals.
Designed to assist sellers who may lack the necessary equipment or expertise to produce high-quality, professional images, eBay’s background enhancement tool offers a significant upgrade to eBay’s earlier solution. Previously, the platform used computer vision technology to provide listing photos with plain white backgrounds. The new AI feature, however, is powered by the open-source model Stable Diffusion, promising enhanced visual appeal and customization.
This latest innovation follows the company’s introduction of an AI feature last year that automates the generation of titles and descriptions for product listings.
