During the annual Google I/O 2024 conference, Google unveiled an innovative feature that will enable users to access geospatial augmented reality (AR) content directly through Google Maps on their smartphones. This groundbreaking functionality will initially be rolled out in Singapore and Paris as part of a pilot program set to commence later this year.
To utilize this AR content, users can search for a location in Google Maps. If the searched location supports AR content and the user is in proximity, they will need to tap on the “AR Experience” prompt and then elevate their phone.
Furthermore, users exploring a location remotely can also experience AR through Street View. Post AR exploration, users have the option to share their experiences via a deep link URL or QR code on social media platforms.
In Singapore, this feature will allow users to virtually explore iconic landmarks such as Chinatown and Gardens by the Bay, delve into local cuisine, and witness a ceremonial dragon dance. Meanwhile, in Paris, users can visualize historical scenes from the 1900 Exposition Universelle country pavilions along the Seine River and observe various historical modifications to the Eiffel Tower.
Google emphasizes that these AR capabilities are foundational steps towards building a comprehensive extended reality (XR) platform. This venture is in collaboration with industry leaders Samsung and Qualcomm, aimed at enhancing the Android ecosystem.
