At the highly anticipated WWDC 2024, Apple unveiled iOS 18, marking a significant evolution in its iPhone operating system. For real-time updates on this monumental event, you can follow our WWDC 2024 live blog.
This major software overhaul is set to deliver substantial enhancements to essential iPhone apps such as Mail, Messages, Photos, and Notes. Many of these improvements stem from Apple’s latest AI innovation, known as Apple Intelligence.
Similar to Samsung’s Galaxy AI and Google’s Gemini suite, Apple Intelligence promises to revolutionize the way you interact with your device. Key functionalities include the ability to quickly summarize notes, messages, emails, and notifications. Additionally, this AI will seamlessly transcribe voice recordings, refine the tone of emails, and optimize your inbox much like Gmail does.
For instance, the Mail app will soon auto-categorize emails and offer easily digestible summaries. The Photos app will merge into a singular view that features both a photo grid and a dates grid. You’ll be able to filter images by classifications such as screenshots and groups, and your iPhone’s predictive technology will showcase the likely photos you want to see upon opening the app.

Elevating Siri and Messaging
Siri is also undergoing a significant transformation with the integration of Apple Intelligence. The much-maligned voice assistant will soon execute a broader array of essential tasks related to timekeeping, productivity, and web navigation more efficiently.
Beyond AI capabilities, iOS 18 introduces several exciting new features. Users will have the ability to react to messages using any emoji within the Messages app. Scheduled messaging will become a part of your toolkit, allowing you to send texts at ideal times. Text-formatting options are being expanded to include underlining, strikethroughs, bold text, and other creative formats like ripple effects.
Customization and Control Upgrades
For the first time, iOS 18 will allow users to rearrange app icons and widgets. This update lets you position apps along the bottom or side of the screen, thus creating more space for your wallpaper. A new dark mode for app icons, as well as the ability to add color tints, will also be introduced.
The Control Center is receiving a comprehensive upgrade as well. Users will soon be able to segment the Control Center into distinct functional groups, such as Media and Home. Resizing Control Center widgets and choosing which ones appear on the Lock Screen will also become possible.
